Science fiction is a very imaginative genre. Texts that are
classified as science fiction often take place in the future, somewhere new and
undiscovered. However, this genre does not have stories that are very surreal
because that would fall under the genre of fantasy (Readwritethink.org). Many
science fiction books feature technological advances that we do not currently
have. These advances could be based on current science or technology (Treitel).
Some authors create an entirely new world but keep some realities within the
plot to make it believable. Some books are difficult to classify in this genre
because it borders so closely to fantasy. The realistic and believe elements of
a book and its plot is what determines if the book is science fiction or not.
Reading this genre can help a young student explore new thoughts and ideas
while expanding their imaginations.

What is your experience with science fiction as a child? Even as an adult?
ReplyDeleteAs a child I don't recall reading books and recognizing them as science fiction. I've noticed that science fiction is closely related to fantasy, especially in elementary level books. As an adult I have recently been more interested in science fiction. I started reading the Hunger Games series and noticed how it is classified as science fiction and not fantasy.
DeleteSee I would have never thought Hunger Games would be considered Science Fiction. When you defined it in your blog I was suprised at the definition. So often people get these genres confused. I automatically assume science fiction to be a book like Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy because it has space in it. Sounds very silly to say but I wouldn't have thought twice about it.
